How to Use Xbox Play Anywhere
Backed by Microsoft Studios, Xbox Play Anywhere is a service that allows users to purchase games digitally and play them either on Windows 11/10 or on their game console, the Xbox One, at no additional cost. Purchasing a game with an Xbox Play Anywhere tag on Microsoft’s Xbox One console unlocks it for free on Windows 10 devices, and vice versa. All titles with Xbox Play Anywhere support a number of popular Microsoft networking features that are shared by normal Microsoft Xbox One console games, such as Xbox Achievements and free cloud save.
Games with Xbox 360 and Xbox One written on their graphics can be found on their respective consoles, while those using the Xbox Live tag can be found on Windows 10 devices. Xbox Play Anywhere features are listed in video game descriptions in digital storefronts, usually next to the name and under the “How to play” subheading.
So how do you use Xbox Play Anywhere? If you purchase an Xbox Play Anywhere title from the Windows Store and want to download the XPA experience to your Xbox One video game console, simply sign in to your Xbox One and go to My games & apps. Start the Xbox Windows app to browse available games, then choose the button under the Xbox logo to access your library.
To see if a specific Xbox game is playable on PC, search for it on the Xbox website or in the Xbox Windows app. To play an Xbox game on your laptop or desktop, you can stream games through a preinstalled console companion on Windows 10, the Xbox Companion.
If you can’t find it there, then your only option is to stream all cloud-enabled Game Pass titles directly from an Xbox console using Xbox Remote Play. Microsoft has you covered with Remote Play, which lets you stream games from an Xbox directly to a phone, tablet, or PC game.
Remote Play does not require an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription, but you will need a compatible controller. It should be noted that this is not the same as Xbox Cloud Gaming (also known as xCloud), which streams games from Microsoft’s own servers to your device. With remote and cloud options, you can easily access game titles via Xbox Cloud Gaming or Remote Play on Xbox One. Xbox Remote Play also gives you more options and works on all Windows computers.
Naturally, you can conclude that Xbox Play Anywhere is only supported on Windows 10 PCs, and only on consoles that have Xbox One games running the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. It seems to have been a bit murky For many people that XPA titles are also playable on Windows 10 PCs, but Microsoft’s Xbox marketing manager Aaron Greenberg clarified that Xbox Game Pass subscribers will be able to play Play Anywhere titles on PC as well.
