SuperSTEEL Tip 1

Simple connections

The first user tip in the SuperSTEEL usage tip series covers the techniques for creating a Simple Connection.   It is possible to design a connection in SuperSTEEL as Simple as long as the following critea are met (clause 2.1.2.2 from BS5950-1:2000):

  • All beams framing into the column are released in teh same plane
  • The support at the base of the column is released for rotation

View Demonstration

In SuperSTRESS:

  • Release the Ry value of each of the members coming into the column at all levels in the plane that you would like to make a simple connection
  • Free the support at the foot of the column in the same plane

In SuperSTEEL:

  • Go to Tools>>Options and check the Simple option under Design>>Design Type
  • The simple connection will now be enclosed by a black box and you will be able to open the Simple Connection table or manipulate the Origin or Eccentricity graphically

The additional moments developed from the eccentricities are now included in the reports and design:

More tips and techniques like this are covered in our training course.
